چکیده

The waterfall transform is a hierarchical segmentation technique based on the watershed transform from the field of mathematical morphology. Watershedbased techniques are useful in numerous fields ranging from image segmentation to cell-and-portal generation for games. The waterfall helps mitigate the problem of over-segmentation that commonly occurs when applying the basic watershed transform. It can also be used as a core part of a method for constructing image partition forests, a tree-based, multi-scale representation of an image. The best existing method for the waterfall is fast and effective, but our experience has been that it is not as straightforward to implement as might be desired. Furthermore, it does not deal consistently with the issue of non-minimal plateaux. This paper therefore proposes two new tree-based methods for the waterfall. Both are easier to implement than the existing state-of-the-art, and in our implementations were both faster by a constant factor. The Simplified Waterfall (SW) method focuses on simplicity and ease of implementation; the Balanced Waterfall (BW) method focuses on robust handling of non-minimal plateaux. We perform experiments on both 2D and 3D images to contrast the new methods with each other and with the existing state-of-the-art, and show that both achieve a noticeable speed-up whilst producing similar results.

Fast Implementation of Waterfall Based on Graphs

The waterfall algorithm is a contrast-based hierarchical segmentation approach. In this paper we propose an efficient implementation based on the minimum spanning tree of the neighborhood graph. Furthermore, other hierarchies are proposed and compared to the original version of the algorithm.

Lattice Boltzmann Method Application on Headwater at Lata Kinjang Waterfall, Malaysia

Headwater accident is a natural phenomenon that occurs in every flow channel, resulting in tremendous incidents that involve vulnerable lives and destruction of its surroundings. This study focuses on simulation of potential headwater accidents at Lata Kinjang waterfall (Perak, Malaysia) with the aim of understanding the behavior of headwater accidents from the hydraulic aspect. By deploying th...

Hierarchical 3D Segmentation Using Connected Face Structure

This paper describes a new approach for watershed segmentation on triangular mesh. Common watershed approaches use descending or flooding processes on a connected vertex structure. Watershed transformation is not related to a structure in particular: it only requires connected elements and a height function. This method is widely used on 2D, 3D images as well as on 3D meshes. Here, a connected ...

Evaluation of estimation methods for parameters of the probability functions in tree diameter distribution modeling

One of the most commonly used statistical models for characterizing the variations of tree diameter at breast height is Weibull distribution. The usual approach for estimating parameters of a statistical model is the maximum likelihood estimation (likelihood method). Usually, this works based on iterative algorithms such as Newton-Raphson. However, the efficiency of the likelihood method is not...

Object-Based Classification of UltraCamD Imagery for Identification of Tree Species in the Mixed Planted Forest

This study is a contribution to assess the high resolution digital aerial imagery for semi-automatic analysis of tree species identification. To maximize the benefit of such data, the object-based classification was conducted in a mixed forest plantation. Two subsets of an UltraCam D image were geometrically corrected using aero-triangulation method. Some appropriate transformations were perfor...
